46 New Read Aloud Lessons Added

Core Task Project

Forty-six new Read Aloud Project (RAP) lessons have been added to www.63000resources.com. They are divided into different subjects based on the Next Generation Science Standards and popular state social studies standards. You can find well-vetted lessons on Animals, Insects & Reptiles (here); Earth and Space (here); Families Around the World (here); Weather and Seasons (here); and the nebulous category “Other” here.

The RAP resources have been developed by classroom teachers from throughout the country and are free. They are matched to the instructional shifts and ensure that all students are working with complex text and its academic vocabulary. You can learn more about the RAP and join the Edmodo group here.

The Global Read Aloud 2015 Choices Are…#GRA15

It was tough.  I am not going to lie.  Every year it seems like the book choices get better and better.  Every year I change my mind a million times.  Every year I am surprised by some of the votes in some of the categories.  And every year i reserve the right to not go with the popular vote but go with my gut instead.  So this year is no different; some books won their categories fair and square, while others have yet to be discovered by a broader audience.  I hope you will trust me that these choices will make for incredible conversations.  I hope that you will trust me that it will be worthwhile for you to read aloud these books to your students or children starting October 5th.  One thing though that I know for sure about all of our contenders and all of our finalists; they…

Maybe we don’t understand what readers really do – and why it matters

In many ways, the 2013 reading scores for 12th-graders were even more discouraging [than the lack of progress in math]. While the average score of 288 was unchanged from 2009 – and two points higher than in 2005, which represented a nadir for the reading score – it was lower than the average of 292 back in 1992.

5 unfortunate misunderstandings that almost all educators have about Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Granted, and...

Admit it: you only read the list of the six levels of the Taxonomy, not the whole book that explains each level and the rationale behind the Taxonomy. Not to worry, you are not alone: this is true for most educators.

But that efficiency comes with a price. Many educators have a mistaken view of the Taxonomy and the levels in it, as the following errors suggest. And arguably the greatest weakness of the Common Core Standards is to avoid being extra-careful in their use of cognitive-focused verbs, along the lines of the rationale for the Taxonomy.

The 5 misunderstandings:

  1. The first two or three levels of the Taxonomy involve “lower-order” and the last three or four levels involve “higher-order” thinking.

This is false. The only lower-order goal is “Knowledge” since it uniquely requires mere recall in testing. Furthermore, it makes no sense to think that “Comprehension” – the 2nd
